7 Churches Meet to Conclude Lent

An ecumenical Good Friday service was held March 29 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with seven leaders of Georgetown churches participating in the traditional presentation of the sayings of Jesus on the cross — or the Seven Last Words from the Cross.

The seven expressions are biblically attributed to Jesus Christ during his crucifixion and have become known as “the seven last words of Jesus.” Each of the seven ministers or priests was assigned to one of the words. …

More than 200 persons from various congregations attended the moving service. After each word, there was a brief reflection. Hymns were sung, and choral meditations were offered. The service — a little more than an hour — was followed by a reception.

“Prior to Covid, it was a common practice,” Gillepsie said. “So, we have revived this ecumenical service. Another denomination will host the Seven Last Words next year. All are welcome.” …
